Popcorn’s ability to pop lies in the fact that the kernels contain a small amount of water stored in a circle of soft starch (endosperm) inside the hard outer casing (pericarp, also referred to as the hull). When heated, the water expands, creating pressure within, until eventually the casing gives way, and the kernels explode and pop, allowing the water to escape as steam, turning the kernels inside and out.

Chocolate
  1. I received a pack of Peanut Butter Cups that only had 2 cups instead of 3, why?
As part of our production, the trays are hand packed, bulked off and then feed into a wrapping machine. On a rare occasion, a cup may pop out of the tray just prior to being wrapped causing an empty cavity to be present. In an effort to prevent this from happening we have increased our quality control on this line with additional checks and balances. In addition, we are implementing an additional level of weight checking to validate the increased quality control measures.
  2. Is the organic vanilla used in your chocolate bars and cups gluten and wheat free?
Yes, the grain used in the alcohol base for our vanilla is GE-free Corn grain. It contains no wheat, wheat gluten, barley, spelt oats or rye.

Our chocolate liquor does not contain any alcohol in fact the contents are cocoa solids and cocoa butter. Chocolate liquor is merely a roasted cocoa bean that has been pulverized into a liquid form.
  4. I received chocolate with air holes, why?
Because our products are organic it lacks all the emulsifiers that make it smooth out like an ordinary non-organic product; therefore when it settles into the mold, it doesn’t “settle out” into all the ridges of that mold with as much evenness as a non organic product. There may be bars with one end slightly thicker than the other because of this settling as well.

The caffeine content in our Espresso Dark Chocolate Bar 1.2 oz is 23.95 milligrams/bar and 71 milligrams/bar for our 2.8oz Espresso Chocolate bar.

No, our Peanut Butter Cups do not contain trans fat. Trans fat is a component of hydrogenated fats. It is a separate category of fats from saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In our Peanut Butter Cups, the total fat is 12 grams, saturated fat is 6 grams the remaining fat is a mix of mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids.
  7. What is the caffeine content in your Sweet Dark Chocolate Bars?
The 2.8 oz Sweet Dark Chocolate Bars contain around 34 milligrams of caffeine per bar while the 1.2 oz Sweet Dark Chocolate Bars contain around 15 milligrams per bar.

  2. Do your products contain GE (Genetically Engineered) organisms?
Certified organic ingredients are not allowed to contain GEs. All non-organic ingredients in organic products are not allowed to contain GEs. Newman's Own Organics makes sure all of our ingredients are certified by a 3rd party certification group. This group is Oregon Tilth. Oregon Tilth has been approved by the USDA to certify handlers of organic foods.

  4. Where can I send my Grant information?
Newman's Own Organics does not make charitable donations. All grants have been made by Paul Newman personally to fund non-profit organizations with a 501c(3) designation from the IRS. If you would like to inquire about a grant you may write to: Office of Paul Newman Dept. ORG Colonial Green 246 Post Road East Westport, Connecticut 06880
  5. Why do you use palm oil?
Our experience has shown us that Palm Fruit Oil Palm Oil creates better tasting products when used in certain commercial baking processes, particularly in the cell structure of our cookie dough. We recognize that there are other less saturated oils and we tried using them during the product development of our items and found they did not create as good a product as palm oil. While organic palm oil is a saturated fat, it is not as saturated as palm kernel oil or coconut oil (the other two tropical oils). Palm Fruit Oil is only 51% saturated as compared to Palm Kernel Oil at 83% and Coconut at 92%. In fact, it is close to the saturated fat level of butter but contains no cholesterol. It is used by other natural food manufacturers and has been widely used in Europe for decades as a fat in cookies and crackers. We recognize that there are trade-offs in creating good tasting, popular foods made with organic ingredients, that have some nutritional benefits and are reasonably priced. It’s not that easy, but that is what we strive to do.
  6. Why does Newman's Own Organics use plastic and other materials of this nature to package food? What about more environmentally friendly methods?
We are so glad you are learning about how to take care of the world we live in. It is the only one we have and taking care of it should be a priority. We at Newman’s Own Organics are also concerned about the environment which is why we support sustainable agriculture and produce organic products. Organic products must have months of shelf life to compete at retail level. Rather than use preservatives we use packaging that will insure freshness. However, we do use a corn based biodegradable plastic to package our produce.
  7. Do you carry any products that are gluten free?
Some of our gluten free products include our: Chocolate Bars except Crisp Rice, Chocolate Cups, and No Salt/No Butter Pop’s Corn, Olive Oil, and Our Balsamic Vinegar. Note: All of these items are manufactured on equipment that processes products containing gluten. There could be trace amounts of egg, milk powder, peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, and soy in any of our items. Our Wheat-Free/Dairy-Free items do have a type of gluten known as glutenin and gliadin, which is found in barley flour.
