More Than You Ever Wanted To Know About Palm Fruit Oil
Origin: The organic Palm Fruit Oil we are using comes from
an area near Santa Marta in Colombia where its production supports
an indigenous population. The crop helps to preserve and protect
the area it comes from.
Organics: Palm Fruit Oil is produced from a fruit and is
ideal for organic production. Palm trees are very hearty (unlike
banana palms) and not readily affected by disease or pests. They
tend to be self sustaining so there is no reason to subject them
to chemical treatments and synthetic fertilizers. Palm fruit oil
is extracted by simply squeezing the fruit. The organic Palm Fruit
Oil is third party certified organic, as are all of our products
and production facilities.
Palm Fruit Oil: Palm Fruit Oil consists of two basic fractions
- palm olein, which is liquid at room temperature, and palm stearin,
which is solid at room temperature. Palm Oil possesses a wide melting
point, so increasing or reducing temperature can separate these
two fractions. The palm olein can be "whipped" back into the stearin
and can be used just like butter or margarine in baking or frying
or any other use. Since it has no moisture (butter or margarine
have 20% water content), we can use less of it.
Palm Fruit Oil vs. Palm Kernel: The Palm Fruit Oil we are
using is not Palm Kernel Oil. Palm kernel oil is extracted
from the nut and is generally solvent extracted. Palm fruit oil
is extracted only from the fruit. It is refined using a heat and
vacuum process to reduce humidity, acidity and rancidity, and filtered
& deodorized.
Comparisons to Other Tropical Oils: Palm Kernel oil is
83% saturated fat; Coconut Oil is 92% saturated; Palm Fruit Oil
is only 51% saturated fat and contains no cholesterol.
Butter: Butter is 54% saturated and contains
high levels of cholesterol.
Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil: Although Palm Fruit
Oil has more saturated fat than partially hydrogenated oil, it contains
no trans-fatty acids.
Europe: Europeans use palm fruit oil, particularly organic
Palm Fruit Oil in a variety of baked goods, candies, chips and other
snacks. It is extremely high in tocopherols and tocotrienols. The
best know tocopherol is Vitamin E.
